ServerTest Removal Guide

Do you know what ServerTest is?

ServerTest is an annoying browser hijacker that will not disappear from your computer just because you restore your browser settings to default. This threat is far more sophisticated than that, and it can remain on your computer for a long time if you do not get rid of it at the fundamental levels.

In this description, we will tell you more about this infection, and we will also give you the manual removal instructions that should help you terminate this intruder. On the other hand, if you do not feel confident about your software removal skills, it is always a good idea to rely on a licensed antispyware tool.

We would like to point out that ServerTest is not the original name of this browser hijacker. Normally, computer security specialists use several keywords for a particular intruder, because users tend to look for information on a particular threat using different words, too. Hence, ServerTest is just one of the many names for the Yeadesktop.com hijacker. If you have ever read an article on Yeadesktop.com, you will definitely know how to deal with ServerTest, too. Because, as you can probably tell, both names refer to the same infection.

What’s more, our research shows that this program is a WMI hijacker. WMI stands for Windows Management Instrumentation, and when a hijacker affects this set of extensions, you can be sure that it will be a little bit hard to remove it, compared to other regular hijackers. Basically, WMI allows the operating system to communicate with other components, and if a security threat intercepts that information, a program or two may not function as you want it to. Needless to say, in the case of the ServerTest infection, the application that no longer functions properly is your browser.

As far as we know, this program can affect Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome browsers. To make it harder for you to change your settings back to normal, ServerTest changes the target lines for every single browser. It means that resetting the browser’s settings to default would not make the infection disappear. It will regenerate every single time because it will still have its data written in the shortcut target line. The very same thing was done by Yeabests.cc, a variation of Yeadesktop.com. These browser hijackers are known to redirect users to yeadesktopbr.com, and other unreliable pages. The bottom line is that they are dangerous and they have to be removed.

However, before you go down to the removal process, you should also know more about the distribution and how to avoid such applications in the future. These browser hijackers tend to come bundled. It means that the program does not come from a direct source and it does not come alone. What’s more, users probably download ServerTest willingly with some other application when they look for programs at file-sharing sites. In fact, downloading freeware from third-party source can be quite dangerous, so you should refrain from doing that. If you must have a program, make sure you get it at an official homepage.

While browser hijackers are mostly there to generate a financial profit for their developers, some of the programs could also be exploited by cyber criminals. Not that exposing you to corrupted content is on ServerTest’s to-do list, but the thing is that browser hijacker cannot decide who or what makes use of their networks. Therefore, if you have a program that modifies your browser’s settings without your permission, you need to make sure that you remove that program as soon as possible.

As mentioned, removing ServerTest might be a little bit complicated, but it is not impossible. The thing is that instead of resetting your browser, you need to modify the target line and then delete all the files associated with this hijacker from your computer. Then, you can try resetting your browser’s settings to default.

Finally, after manual removal, you should look for ways to protect your computer from similar intruders. The best way to ensure that your system does not get exposed to malware is to invest in a licensed antispyware tool. If you keep it updated all the time, it should protect you and your system from malicious infections.
