Ever get tricked into clicking a Virus file on your PC because you could not tell what type of file it was?
Do not be fooled by files on your computer because you cannot identify what type of file it is. It is best to display the file extension on files before you attempt to open an unknown file.
PC Tip: Knowing the file extension lets a user know if it is a legitimate executable file type. Some common virus files are listed with a .jpg.vbs file extension. This is a trick to make a user believe the file is an actual .jpg file type. The actual extension on a file that has .jpg.vbs is actually a .vbs file which could be a virus.
Enable the ability to view the file extensions of all files. Follow the steps below.
- Click Start menu > My Computer > Tools menu > Folder Options.
- Click the View tab and find the check box for Hide extensions for known file types.
- Uncheck the check box for Hide extensions for known file types.
- Click OK
