GeoByPass Removal Guide

Do you know what GeoByPass is?

Cyber security experts have classified GeoByPass as adware because it is designed to show commercial advertisements while you browse the web. However, it is not promoted as a program that shows ads but rather as a tool that enables you to access region-restricted websites. It is a good disguise indeed as it will surely attract many users that wish to see content that is mostly forbidden to users outside of the US. Our malware researchers say that this program is bound to show ads inside the web browser and there is no way of knowing whether they are safe to click.

According to GeoByPass’s website at Geobypass.net, it is a “Simple, Safe, Fast DNS service” that is supposed to allow you to access geographically restricted content online for free quickly. Allegedly, you can use this application to access the services of websites that include but not limited to Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and Pandora. However, this program does not explicitly state its other feature that involves showing commercial advertisements. Our security experts say that the ads should appear on your browser as coupons, pop-ups, pop-unders, banners, and so on. Furthermore, you will see ads regardless of your web browser, so it does not matter whether you use Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer – you will see the ads as this program uses a different approach to subject you to them.

Our researchers say that when you install GeoByPass, the installer should open your browser and load Geobypass.net/setup. This page features instructions for Windows and Mac users on how to change the DNS settings to bypass the restrictions and access the restricted websites supposedly. In short, it features instructions on how to modify the address of the DNS server to 81.218.119.11 and 209.88.198.133. Now, you might be able to access the restricted websites, but you will have to pay a price for this. This program’s EULA states "Please note that our Services are offered free of charge. You understand that to help maintain our Service free of charge, we may display advertisements through our Services (the free service is ad-supported)." Regardless, whether the ads are shown with the intention to maintain the service or to make a profit, we advise you to consider the fact that the advertisements can come from shady sources and at least some of them may redirect you to malicious sites.GeoByPass Removal GuideGeoByPass screenshot

While GeoByPass is being promoted on Geobypass.net, it is not, however, distributed on it. Its Tel Aviv-based developers have opted for a different dissemination tactic. Our malware researchers say that it is likely that this program is distributed through software bundles. Bundled software featured on questionable websites is apt to feature adware and browser hijackers, so be careful when you install software from unknown websites. However, it important to note that, you have to change the DNS manually because this program does not change them. Furthermore, it seems that this program’s ad server is down because testing has shown that it does not connect to it. But, this might be temporary, and the server may come back online. Therefore, it would be best to get rid of it before it can compromise your PC’s security.

After testing this program, our security experts came to the conclusion that it is adware and, thus, it should be treated as such. We recommend that you delete all adware-type applications as they are inherently dangerous because their developers do not shy away from advertising unvetted potentially dangerous content. Our researchers have made a manual removal guide that we have included below, so well free to put it to good use.

In non techie terms:

It is claimed that GeoByPass is a useful tool for accessing restricted online content, but our researchers have found that that is not true. They say that if you modify your PC DNS settings as indicated in this program’s instructions, then all web traffic will go through this program’s server and will be modified to feature advertisements. These ads may be dangerous, so we suggest that you do not take any chances and remove it using our guide.
